Thomas Hirschhorn baut auf Einladung der renommierten Dia Art Foundation in den Forest Houses, einer Sozialbausiedlung in der New Yorker Südbronx, das «Gramsci Monument»; eine Hommage an den italienischen Polit-Philosophen und Kommunisten Antonio Gramsci. Die Menschen des Viertels helfen beim Aufbau und dem Betrieb der Kunstinstallation mit. Dadurch wird das «Gramsci Monument» einen Sommer lang gleichzeitig zum Quartiertreffpunkt wie auch zum Mekka der Kunstwelt. Der Filmemacher begleitet dieses Abenteuer und setzt sich mit Anspruch und Wirklichkeit von Hirschhorns künstlerischem Werk auseinander.

At the invitation of the renowned Dia Art Foundation, Thomas Hirschhorn is building the "Gramsci Monument" in the Forest Houses, a social housing estate in New York's South Bronx; a homage to the Italian political philosopher and communist Antonio Gramsci. The people of the neighbourhood are helping to set up and operate the art installation. For one summer, the "Gramsci Monument" will thus become both a meeting place for the quarter and a Mecca for the art world. The filmmaker accompanies this adventure and deals with the claim and reality of Hirschhorn's artistic work.

Sur invitation de la célèbre Dia Art Foundation des Forest Houses, un lotissement de logements sociaux dans le sud du Bronx, à New York, Thomas Hirschhorn construit le «Gramsci Monument», un hommage au politicien, philosophe et communiste italien Antonio Gramsci. Les gens du quartier l’aident à monter et à faire fonctionner l’installation artistique. Le «Gramsci Monument» devient ainsi, le temps d’un été, le point de ralliement du quartier, mais aussi la Mecque du monde de l’art. Le cinéaste accompagne cette aventure: une réflexion sur les ambitions et la réalité de l’œuvre artistique de Hirschhorn.
